In this tutorial, I will stick with Finale’s Middle C = C4 system to avoid confusion (see MIDI Note to Pitch Table), but this means the pitch names I use here won’t correspond to the pitch names given in the Garritan documentation. This conflicts with Finale’s system, which displays pitch names using the Middle C = C4 standard.

The full Garritan documentation refers to Middle C - MIDI note #60 - as C3 (instead of the usual C4).

Inspired by Terence, this is now on my quick-lookup page in Opera!īut since we are at MakeMusic's forum, you might also want to know that: Good thing somebody smarter than I created the system, because I would have screwed it up. (and notice the helpful mnemonic: A4= 440, 4th note up from the bottom of the treble staff) I always thought there was some conflict between the two systems, but they actually agree. Handbells put C5 on the ledger line in the middle of the grand staff, which is precisely consistent with the octave transposition and the A4=440 convention. Great site! It goes into my bookmarks for sure! I also learned a bit on handbells in the process: You can Google MIDI spec and General MIDI Standard if you want to dig through the info for yourself.ĭitto on Brian's comments. The General MIDI Standard does, however, specify that A 440 must be sounded by note number 69. There are 128 available notes and each manufacturer is left to their own as to how they implement these notes. They like C4 and C-B.įinale 2010b, GPO 4, JABB 3, Garritan Steinway BasicĪs far as I know from what little poking around I've done in MIDI spec documents found online, there is no "correct number" for middle C.

If anyone could cite a definitive references ( not WikiPedia! ) that would be great! Thanks!!Ĭheck out and look up Octave. Īlso, do the octave numbers break at "C", or at "A" - ie, do you go (for example), G3, A3, B3, C4. On my Yamaha keyboards it's called C3 - but other makes use C4, or even C5. I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find the reference - what is the concensus about the correct "number" associated with Middle C (MIDI note 60, pitch around 261Hz)?
